A cable hanging loose, visible fraying or a door sitting unevenly is a reason to stop using the opening. Same-day service is available for most jobs, subject to availability; describe a trapped vehicle or unsecured door when you call.
Do not lift or release a suspect door to test it. If the door is partly open, keep people, pets and vehicles out of the opening and use another safe entrance. Tell us if there is a security concern or if essential access is blocked. Emergency service is available 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays; ask about availability for the address.
Clopay identifies frayed strands, slack cables and cables coming off drums or pulleys as warning signs.
What a cable problem looks like
Clopay identifies frayed strands, slack cables and cables coming off drums or pulleys as warning signs. A crooked door may accompany a cable problem, but its appearance alone does not identify every damaged part. Report what you have already seen. Do not run the door again, pull a cable straight or try to put it back on its drum.
Door cables belong to the lifting hardware; they are different from an opener's power cord or safety-sensor wiring. If you are unsure which item you are looking at, describe its position and what changed. Our main repair page covers the other mechanical services a damaged door may need.
Garage Door RepairWhat the cables do
Lift cables work with the springs to move the door. On a torsion-spring door, the cables run from the lower corners towards drums near the top. A door using extension springs has a different pulley arrangement. The important booking detail is the existing layout, not whether you know the correct name for every part.
A safety containment cable through an extension spring has a different purpose from a lift cable. DASMA describes it as a means of containing a broken extension spring. Do not assume that any cable visible near a spring is interchangeable with another one, and do not remove one to identify it. Leave cable selection and tension-related work to a trained technician.
Signs of cable damage
Fraying means individual wires are visibly separating from the cable. Slack is a different observation: the cable no longer appears to follow its normal route under tension. A cable off its drum is different again. Describe whichever condition is already visible, without reaching towards the hardware or trying to pull it back into place.
Door movement matters too. If the door has tilted, jammed or stopped with one side higher, include that history in the request. A noise by itself does not prove a cable is broken. Avoid choosing a repair solely from a sound or an internet photograph; describe the sound and the visible position separately so neither detail is lost.
Clopay Cable Safety GuidanceSafety
Damaged lift cables can create an unsafe door condition. DASMA warns that frayed cables may break and that replacements should be performed only by trained technicians because of spring tension. Keep hands away from loose strands, drums and bottom brackets. Do not detach a cable, loosen its bracket or use household wire as a temporary substitute.
Cables and the rest of the counterbalance system
A cable fault and a spring fault are related through the counterbalance system, but they are not the same repair description. A visibly displaced cable does not establish whether a spring, drum, roller or section also needs attention. An estimate should be understandable about the work proposed for each component, without treating a symptom as a complete diagnosis.
If you have records of an earlier spring or cable replacement, keep them available. Mention a recent impact, an obstruction the door encountered, or a change in its movement before it stopped. These details help explain the history of the problem. You do not need to determine the cable length, loosen the door hardware or obtain measurements from an elevated position.
Keep the component names in the repair paperwork. A record that identifies a lift cable, spring containment cable or another replaced item will be easier to refer to than a generic description of cable work, particularly if you later have a question about the part or its warranty.

Our spring repair page explains the difference between torsion and extension arrangements and the warnings associated with a broken spring. The roller and track system guides the moving door, while cables and springs perform different roles. A door that appears crooked may need consideration beyond a cable alone; keep the description of the fault broad enough to include what you saw.
Use emergency garage door service when a cable problem leaves the opening unsecured or a vehicle inaccessible. Say whether the door is fully closed, partly open or fully open, and whether a separate pedestrian entrance is available.
What a cable job costs
You receive a free on-site estimate. Ask which cables are included, whether other damaged hardware is listed, and which labour and parts warranty terms apply. Compare the descriptions alongside the totals so you know whether the quotations concern the same work.
