Start with the property address and proposed configuration: confirm the required performance and the product documents supporting that installation.

What a wind-load rating means
A wind-load rating describes pressure resistance, and the required performance is established for the particular project. DASMA's high-wind guidance explains that wind can push a door into the garage or pull it out of the opening. A description such as reinforced or hurricane-rated is therefore only the beginning of a product discussion. Ask for the requirement and the proposed door's documented performance to be compared, rather than selecting from one broad marketing label.
The garage-door opening, supporting building and site conditions belong in that discussion. Clopay's wind-load information provides drawings for particular models and opening widths, with details for sections, reinforcement, hardware and track. It also distinguishes the door documentation from the structural design responsibility of a licensed architect or building engineer. A garage-door drawing should not be treated as an evaluation of an unknown supporting structure.
Ask for the requirement before comparing products
Provide the exact property address and explain whether this is a replacement in an existing opening or part of wider construction. Ask who is establishing the project's required performance and whether further design information is needed. If you have plans, an existing permit record or an earlier product specification, share them as background. They still need to be checked against the new work rather than assumed to settle it.
If alternatives are offered, compare them against the same stated requirements and note any configuration differences. A generic wind-speed claim or a neighbour's door does not establish suitability for your opening.
Opening protection is a separate question
Wind resistance and impact resistance are separate characteristics; one does not establish the other. Ask what the proposed product documents show for each characteristic required by your project.
Include windows in the product discussion
If you want windows, give the proposed glazing arrangement the same attention as the door style. Ask which exact window option is included and where its performance is documented for the selected door. Do not infer that a window is impact-resistant because it is small, tinted or fitted in a reinforced-looking door. Likewise, a solid door's appearance alone does not establish the performance of its assembly.
Confirm the required opening protection with the responsible building department or design professional. If the product or design changes, have the relevant performance information checked again before proceeding.
Product information and the permit
Florida's Product Approval system allows searches by manufacturer, product identifier and code version. It also lists application status, use within or outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, impact resistance and design-pressure fields. The search is a way to locate product information; an approval number on its own does not show that a specific product configuration is appropriate for a particular opening or that an installation has been completed correctly.
DASMA advises against operating garage doors during high-wind events and recommends securing them closed beforehand in accordance with the manufacturer's documentation. If an existing door cannot close safely, describe that problem when calling for service. Do not attempt to brace it with a vehicle or improvise a storm repair.
Keep the product and installation documents together
Ask for the exact proposed product identifier and the matching installation documentation to be included with the project information. Check that a changed size, window option or model is reflected in the final paperwork. Clopay's drawings illustrate why the assembly matters: they identify hardware and track details as well as the door sections. Substituting a similar-looking component should not be treated as an equivalent specification without appropriate confirmation.
Experts Garage Door handles the permit for this installation service. Provide the correct address and any existing plans or property restrictions when requesting an estimate. Ask what owner information and project-specific design documents are needed, and confirm the permit-related scope in the proposal.
Choosing style without losing the performance requirement
You can discuss panel design, colour and window preferences while the product specification is being established. Ask which choices are available in a configuration that addresses the project requirements, rather than choosing the appearance first and assuming the same performance is available. Our new-installation page covers the wider service, and the custom-door page explains the material and appearance decisions in more detail.
New Garage Door InstallationCustom Garage DoorsExisting doors and storm preparation
If you are concerned about an existing door, share any accessible manufacturer label and available records without removing hardware. Ask a qualified professional about the actual door and its condition. Do not drill, add improvised reinforcement or assume extra metal proves a rating. DASMA's high-wind guidance directs performance concerns to a design professional, and the door manufacturer's instructions should govern any model-specific storm preparation.

Get a free hurricane-rated door estimate
For a free on-site estimate, share the property address, desired design and any known performance requirements. Confirm supply and installation timing for the selected product.
Request the product warranty and installation-labour terms, and retain them with the final model, approval references, invoice and permit records. Our confirmed six-year labour warranty covers repairs and should not be assumed to cover new installation. For insurance questions, ask your insurer what documentation it needs.
